Based on Mark 5:1-20

One day Jesus and his followers crossed a lake on a boat. As they were stepping out onto the shore, a man with an evil spirit saw Jesus from a distance. This man lived outside of town, and he used to run around screaming, hitting himself with rocks. When the villagers tried to tie him up, he would break the chains they tied him with. No one could control him.

This man, when he saw Jesus, ran to him and fell at his feet. The evil spirits inside of the man said, “Why are you bothering me, Son of the Most High God? Please don’t torture me!” Jesus looked at the man and asked, “What is your name?” The evil spirits inside of the man answered Jesus, “Army, because there are so many of us inside this man.”The evil spirits begged Jesus not to send them far away, but to allow them to go into a herd of ani- mals nearby. So Jesus gave them permission. As soon as the evil spirits went into the animals, all the animals ran down the hillside, into the water, and drowned.

The men watching over the herd of animals saw what had happened and ran to tell the villagers. The villagers rushed out to the lakeshore. When they arrived, they saw the man sitting next to Jesus, in his right mind—and they were afraid. They begged Jesus to go away and leave them alone.

So Jesus began to leave, but the man that Jesus had healed begged him, “Please let me go with you!” Jesus said, “No! Go home to your family and tell them everything God has done for you.” So the man left, and told not just his family, but people in the ten cities in the region. Everyone who heard was amazed.
