Jesus traveled from place to place, teaching and healing people. In one particular town there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a dishonest tax collector, and he had become very rich because of his dishonesty. He heard that Jesus was coming to town, and he wanted to see him, but he was too short to see over the crowds. So he ran ahead and climbed a tree beside the road. When Jesus came by, he looked up in the tree where Zacchaeus was and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I’m going to come to your house today!” Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and joyfully took Jesus to his house. But the crowds started grumbling, “

Jesus has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner.” But Zacchaeus’ life was already changed. He stood there and said to Jesus, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, and if I have overcharged people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!” Jesus said to him, “Today, the people of this house have been forgive and restored to a right relationship with God because of this man’s belief in me. I have come so that those like him can be restored to God.”
